Our new HR Manager Deanna Schroder is changing the way we say “Thank You” around the office. At our last Quarterly Faculty Meeting, Deanna presented the “We are Family” program, encouraging all of us to say thanks to our fellow colleagues with a small token of our appreciation.
We are Family!
Thank You — we all know how important those two words are, but we don’t say them nearly enough. Keeping staff morale high can be simple and inexpensive with an approach like our new We Are Family! recognition program. It’s as easy as 1-2-3!
Say Thank You
Use the “We are Family!” cards (which you can download here) to thank staff for going above and beyond the call of duty, for doing something extra or for giving special attention to a customer (internal or external) or coworker. When giving a card, you write a short note on the back detailing the extra effort. This minimal investment of time has proven to be an invaluable motivational tool in a number of companies. Managers are encouraged to write at least three cards per week to someone deserving. Any DFM employee can give a card to any other employee.
Collect and enter the monthly drawing!
Employees collect the cards and turn them in to DFM Human Resources for a monthly drawing. There will be an assortment of gift cards (Starbucks, iTunes, movie tickets, Subway, etc.) available for employees to choose from if their card is chosen in the drawing. After an employee turns in their cards, we’ll punch holes in the cards to indicate they have already had a chance in the drawing, and return the cards to the employee. We’ll also publish the employees who win the drawing each month, to remind everyone to keep “catching people doing things right.”
There is no three. It’s just that easy.
Points to Consider…
- The best positive feedback is Sincere, Specific and Selective. Sincere- you have to honestly mean it. Specific – address what exactly they did right and how it’s helping. Selective – praise efforts and results that are truly above-and-beyond. Rewarding someone for showing up to work on time is not meaningful – rewarding someone who shows up sick on a snowy day to finish up a big project for you is.
- This is not a popularity contest – reward consistently and fairly – people know if you’re playing favorites. Reward results – effort is great, results help the bottom line.
- Cards can be given to DFM affiliates to say “thank you,” (let’s share the love!), and only DFM employees can actually win a prize (i.e. PLEASE say thanks to our AHEC/SOM/UPI etc. partners for helping you out, even though they can’t win a gift card).
- Drop the cards off in Deanna’s office (3506) or send them in via interoffice mail.
